Dr Brock chats with me about the importance of having a patient be calm before inducing general anesthesia. Understanding that that is, in part, the point of premedication, it seems that often the premedication is not enough, or maybe, it’s just too late.
Dr Brock is a believer in starting the anesthetic protocol at home whenever possible. This means that the patient enters the hospital in a calm way; and therefore there is no need to “chase” the anxiety and the patient with drugs. We all know how anxious some pets are the minute they walk through the doors of our hospital.
If the patient is calm at the time of induction, then fewer drugs are necessary and the ones you do give just seem to have a better effect. Listen to what Dr Brock has to say about starting the anesthetic protocol at home.
