This is the fifth video in the series on Spay Surgery Concerns. Ovarian Remnant Syndrome (ORS) occurs when some ovarian tissue is left behind at the time of the spay surgery. This is always unfortunate when it occurs as it means a second procedure for the patient. It is not a very common occurrence in the dog but is seen more frequently in the cat; likely due to their smaller size. Diagnosis is confirmed with a hormonal assay. An abdominal ultrasound can also be helpful but is not necessary.
Watch the video for a full description of how to find the ovarian remnants at surgery, but remember to always check both sides! Laparoscopic surgery is ideal for removing ovarian remnants.
