Pre-scrotal vs Scrotal Approach When Neutering a Dog

Dr Sylvestre compares two surgical techniques for neutering male dogs,

the pre-scrotal and scrotal approaches, highlighting their respective advantages and limitations.

The scrotal approach discouraged in the dog because of concerns with increased complications due to excessive licking and mutilation. It was thought that the scrotum of the dog was far too sensorial for shaving let alone an incision. This concept is looking to be a false belief.

Many high volume spay and neuter locations are now using the scrotal approach in the dog and are not see higher incisional complications due to self mutilation and are finding the scrotal approach to result in a significantly shorter surgical time.

The key is not to place skin sutures with the scrotal approach.
