Penrose Drains: The Good, theBad and the How-to

The Penrose drain is a very inexpensive drain to use and likely readily available in most hospitals.  It is easy to use as most veterinarians have seen one used and perfect for a smaller wound.

The biggest disadvantage is that it needs to be bandaged/covered so this can make it more expensive and problematic as it can slip and get very wet. It can also be very messy depending on how much discharge there is.

The messiness of the Penrose drain makes it less desirable and not appreciated by owners. The video demonstrates how to place a Penrose drain and to keep it from slipping out of the wound on its own.
