In this video Dr Sylvestre discusses the many ways that open and closed castrations are described by various clinicians and authors.
You may be scratching your head at the end wondering what technique you are using?! It seems that the issue comes from the nomenclature and we appear to get confused by the name of the layers. Some people refer to that this outer fibrous layer as the vaginal tunic, but it is actually the spermatic fascia.
The video describes the different ways that open vs closed castrations are defined. Is it really possible, from a surgical point of view, to discern the visceral vs the parietal vaginal tunic layers. These layers are continuations of the peritoneum; therefore they are very thin ( a few cells thick) and easily disrupted with manipulation.
Therefore are we really aware of which layers we are breaking through when performing a castration?
