Dr Sylvestre uses this case that was sent to her for advice as a teaching tool for anyone who does and/or simply deals with FHO cases.
The patient is a young Husky dog that had been diagnosed with hip dysplasia and then an acute luxation on one side. He was treated with an FHO but developed a post-operative sciatic nerve deficit.
This is a devastating complication of the FHO, fortunately, not a common one. Prognosis is dependent on the severity (completeness) of the damaged sciatic nerve.
The video discusses how to assess and manage such a case. Some patients will make a full or at least significant recovery so follow up rehabilitation care is important.
This complication is like caused by the retractors so proper and careful positioning of the retractors is described.
