The Jackson Pratt Drain

This is my favourite drain. It is a suction drain, therefore very efficient at removing fluid and it negates dead space by pulling in the tissues. The JP drain prevents any discharge from covering the patient.  It is easy for owners to manage also.

The JP is composed of the drain and the reservoir or grenade. The drain comes in 7mm and 10mm widths. The 7mm is sufficient for our small animal patients.  I use this one exclusively. The grenade comes in 50 and 100ml but the 100ml is the most commonly used.

There are 2 ports on the grenade one that attaches to the drain and the one that allows for the air to be removed and create a vacuum.

Watch the video to see how to properly place the JP drain. You don’t need to worry about the “dependent most’ positioning. I always secure the JP drain in place with the Finger trap technique which is demonstrated in the video also.
