Dr Sylvestre discusses the appropriate use of the #10 and #15 blades.
Using the appropriate blade for the appropriate task will help with surgical efficiency and reduce the risk of errors.
The #10 blade has a large belly and is designed for longer incisions, therefore perfect for making skin incisions.
The #15 blade has a smaller belly and is designed for more precise work and therefore best for the work inside body cavities.
It is inexpensive to have 2 scalpel handles in your surgery pack and at the beginning of surgery load a #10 and #15 blade on each of the scalpel handles so that they are ready to use when you are in surgery. This way you are more likely to use the best instrument for the job when called for.
