2 easy and safe Liver Biopsy Techniques for Veterinarians

Liver biopsies can add valuable information to a patient’s health status. Fortunately that are simple and safe to obtain. In this video Dr Sylvestre discusses her 2 favorite techniques for obtaining a liver biopsy at surgery: the Ligature technique and the Hemostat technique.

Veterinarians can readily perform these biopsy techniques with or without an assistant. Indications for taking a liver biopsy are briefly discussed with the emphasis on caution if needing to biopsy a solitary mass within the liver parenchyma. One should also be aware that there are various approaches that can be used to obtain a liver sample, with the most common being during an exploratory laparotomy.

However, one should don’t discount the keyhole or mini celiotomy and the ultrasound guided techniques. The choice depends on the patient’s full picture and the available expertise.
